We tend to think of throws as adding balance to a space: choose the right colour and they really nail the theme of a room. Grey throws are perfect in this respect because they’re naturally neutral, working well with any decor and adding texture without busyness.

Two particular styles immediately come to mind: Scandinavian and boho-chic. Scandinavian designers have embraced lovingly woven throws, many using natural materials from Northern Europe itself, as a crucial element of hygge, that wonderful coziness we love in rooms we use for relaxing and unwinding. Charcoal-coloured wool is just perfect for this look, pairing naturally with tall ivory candles, and minimalist metal furniture. Drape a geometric-patterned textile with a splash of yellow over a blond wooden chair for an especially inviting seat. Since the dominant colour in this selection is a neutral one, you should feel free to use a few different patterns in a room to add ample texture--you don’t have to worry about an overabundance of colour making it feel manic.

Boho-chic also aims for a chill, inviting vibe, with an emphasis on worn or pre-distressed materials. A throw in a light pewter will look perfect splayed across a coffee table made from drift wood or on a canvas-covered sofa. With so many paler tones, we definitely recommend a few design elements with bright colours: a ceramic vase in aquamarine or an abstract canvas print with shocking goldenrod and tangerine brushstrokes.
