Choosing Your Cushions

Alright, where do you even start? Take a deep breath, chill out, and heed our wise advice. Firstly, consider the colour scheme of your room, especially the piece of furniture you’re putting your need pillows on. It doesn’t have to be totally matchy-matchy, but try to stay within the same color family: warm tones, cool, etc. If your furniture is a neutral color, you can also just choose a few contrasting shades for your cushions and only buy a few in your chosen color palette.

We’re huge fans of layering up contrasting textures, too - suede, silk, anything goes. But we’d stick to just three textures if possible, or else it’ll start to look a bit… er… haphazard. That said, contrasting shapes are also a great look; in fact, we’d say it’s a must if you’re layering your cushions. So mix it up: get a few classic square shapes, a triangular here, a circular there, and suddenly your room has that ‘oh I just threw this all together and it happens to look great’ feel.

Let’s talk patterns: we’re all about layering cool designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment - as long as your cushions are in complementary shades, you’re totally golden. Just go for it - but don’t go overboard, ‘cause a bed overflowing with patterned pillows is a real eyesore. Be sure to pick out a few solid-colored cushions to balance it all out.

Which brings us to our next point - don’t go overboard, period. Depending on the size of your bed/couch, 4-5 decorative cushions are generally enough. You don’t want to max out your space - plus, making your bed with a bunch of pillows is super annoying! You don’t want to spend hours meticulously arranging your cushions - unless that’s your jam, in which case, we think you should follow your bliss.

Ultimately, we think you should go with your gut. Decorating is all about trusting your instincts - so if you see something you really love, go for it. You want your space to be about you, so trust your own taste.

Arranging Your Pillows

Now comes the fun part - think of your couch/bed/chair as a blank canvas, and let those creative juices flow. If you have fun with it, you can’t really go wrong, but here are a few basic guidelines you can follow to get your cushions looking fresh.

We’re fans of putting large pillows on the outside, so they act as a sort of base you can layer smaller cushions on top of. Arranging your cushions so that they’re in descending order according to size, going from the outside in, ensures that your arrangement looks symmetrical and clean.

If you’re not as OCD about symmetry, you can go for the haphazard look and arrange different-sized cushions randomly - as long as you have a balance of sizes, it’ll look artfully undone. If you’re going with this approach, put the larger pillows in the back row, then layer the smaller ones in front.

If your cushions are looking a little rigid, try ‘pillow chopping’ - and no, we’re not talking about taking a machete to your cushions. We mean creating an indent at the top of your pillows to make them look more inviting. To do this, first fluff them up a bit, and then push down on the top of the cushion using a karate-chop motion. You should get a nice V-shaped indent through the middle of the pillow, giving them an invitingly lived-in look.

Another golden rule to keep in mind: stick to odd numbers if possible. An even number of cushions will looks a bit too clean, so go for 3 or 5 pillows to achieve that optimally undone look.

Ultimately, though, don’t stress too much. Just arrange your cushions how you think looks best, then stand back and take it in. Consider how the arrangement looks on the whole, then make adjustments as necessary. We’ve said it before, but trust your gut! Go with what you think looks good and you can’t go wrong.
