There is really no greater hell than prying yourself from the comfort of your warm bed in the mornings to step onto a cold, hard, unforgiving floor. The solution? A rug of course, and ours are not only cosy but effortlessly stylish, designed by a range of amazing artisans around the world using natural fibres like wool and cotton.

Whether your style is eclectic Bohemian, modern minimalist, or you’re looking to inject a little bit of Scandinavian hygge design into your space we’ve got you - and your floors - covered. As well as being a functional must to protect chilly feet - and protect those floors of yours from untidy scuff marks and ill-fated stains - adding a rug or carpet to your space has the power of really tying your aesthetic together. That means that choosing one is no small decision. An intricate woven Moroccan-style number can easily be the focal point of your room, or choose a solid neutral that’ll seamlessly blend in to your existing decor and create harmonious warmth.

Even if you’ve already got carpeted flooring in your abode, there’s no reason why you can’t still throw down a rug to cover any unsightly stains, or simply make a bolder stylistic statement. Nobody will even notice those grey-ish synthetic fibres laid down by your landlord in the 80s if you’ve got some whimsical colour block action on top.

Choosing your rug

First thing’s first, like with wall art, you need to consider the space you’re working with before picking out the right rug. Take measurements, and visualise the style you’re going for. Do you have a lot of floor space or just a small corner? Are you looking for something bold and busy to liven up a bland room or simply something to tie together all the elements that are already there?

If you’re starting with a blank canvas, we recommend choosing your rug first - after your furniture that is - but before selecting the art for your walls or your duvet cover, cushions, and throws. This will allow you to make it the focal point of the room. If you already have the other stuff picked out, it’s still okay, but you’ll just want to be sure that your rug choice works with it all. Stick to similar styles and colour palettes within your room and you’ll be a-ok. Most importantly, make sure it’s the right size in relation to your furniture - more on that later.

For something a touch Bohemian but with classic staying power for your living room or bedroom, we love the NAVAJO collection by Nourison, inspired by Native American tribal patterns and lively colours, these guys would look great against white or wood, or pick out an accent colour from the pattern and boldly splash it across your walls to make the hues pop. Placing your rug

If you’re looking for a rug to cover most of the floorspace in your room, a good rule of thumb is to leave a border of 18 inches on each side between your rug and the wall. If you’re working in a smaller space - as most of us are, let’s be honest - leave about 8 inches instead. This ensures a symmetrical look and lets the floor act as a sort of frame for your rug - wall-to-wall is so not chic.

The same theory applies when you’re using a piece of furniture as the focal point which your rug will frame - be that your bed, a dining table, coffee table, or sofa. Always leave a border, and position the rug so that your furniture is centred on it.

If you don’t have the space or budget for a larger rug, fear not, smaller ones can still make a big impact. The same theory applies though - if you’re placing a small area rug next to your bed, the rug should be about half the length of the bed, and positioned in a way that it would be intuitive to step right onto it when you’re getting out of bed - either flanking the side or at the foot. It doesn’t have to be completely centered, but be logical about its function as well. We also love the idea of playing with two or more small area rugs in a space. For example, one by your bed and one by your dresser, standing mirror, or closet, in different but complementary colours or patterns, to create an unexpected and eclectic look that ties the whole room together.

Most importantly of all though is to just pick something you love, in the size that fits your room. The rest will come together.
