We Meet Eve Thomas, the London based artist & illustrator

What inspired you to become an artist, and when did you first realise that you wanted to pursue this career path?

My Grandma, she used to be such an amazing artist. The 'Beauty Art Print' on my shop is actually based on a charcoal drawing she did years and years ago which i added my own take to. She definitely inspired me and i ended up studying art in college although in all honesty i didn't enjoy it that much and I fell out of love with art. During lockdown i bought an ipad and started to play around with Procreate and found a new love of making digital prints which i still do as much as possible in between busy work and life stuff.

What are some of your favourite materials and mediums to work with, and why do you prefer them?

Definitely digital. I love procreate, the digital art world is endless! I do also enjoy sketching and turning them into digital drawings as sometimes you can't beat pen on paper.

How would you describe your artistic style, and how has it evolved over time?

I would definitely say abstract, i don't ever go into drawing with a solid idea of what the finished product will be. I've basically just evolved from drawing onto paper to drawing on an iPad or using my computer to create a piece. I used to draw a lot of realistic style portraits focusing on the detail, but i have definitely started to lean a lot more into surrealism and abstraction, i like to let my imagination take control when i draw and see what i end up with. I do think my style evolved with the world around me as i really love utilising technology with my art and using my iPad or computer to create elements of a piece that i wouldn't usually be able to do with just paint, or charcoal etc.

What themes or ideas do you explore in your artwork, and why are they important to you?

I really love still life pieces, i did a lot of those over the pandemic as i guess life was just so... still during that time, i found it very inspiring. I also find that i lean towards drawing nature, or flowers a lot, i think because i grew up in Cornwall where i was always surrounded by nature. Also who doesn't love drawing flowers!!

What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have you overcome them?

Art is definitely a passion project for me. I always have trouble finding motivation to work on a piece of art, as i work full time i mostly just feel too tired to be creative after work. After the pandemic it felt like a shock back to normal reality and i fell out of love with art again, most of the pieces on my shop were done during lockdown but i am really trying to find the time to work on more ideas. I'm getting there slowly!

How do you stay motivated and inspired when you hit a creative block or rough patch?

I really struggle with this, as i don't have much time to do art as it is. I like to look scroll through Pinterest instead of Instagram just incase something will inspire me or push me to pick up my iPad. My partner is also an artist and sometimes he challenges me to draw something just so i have an excuse to draw even without a solid idea, its a nice fun way to stay on top of it.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are just starting out on their artistic journeys?

No pressure, if you don't make a piece of art for months, that's totally ok. Don't rush it, quality over quantity always! And have fun!

What are your goals for your art in the future, and where do you see your career going in the next few years?

I am not sure, i just want to enjoy creating things and sharing my designs with people. I just love the idea of people having one of my designs in their home, and i have Fy! to thank for that.

What's your favourite piece that you sell on Fy! and why?

My favourite piece is 'A world Unknown' as it was so fun to make and be randomly creative, it was a bit more of a bold piece than i usually make and it made me fall in love with soft brushing.

Which other artists on the Fy! platform do you love?

83 Oranges, Nethi, Pauline Stanley... there are loads! So many different types of artists to choose from.

Can you share with us a favourite piece of art from another artist and tell us why you love it?

'Goals' by Neethi. I just love their still life style, it reminds me of how i actually was during lockdown doing art. Hunched over my computer surrounded by plants...

Our shoppers love to buy multiple pieces to create Gallery walls, can you suggest any other art prints on Fy! which you feel compliment yours? The 'Agnes Art Print' by Ana Clerici compliments my 'Sunflower Art Print' with the mustard yellow.
