This International Women’s Day Women for Women International are calling for us to use our #powertochange to “stand up, speak up and join a global movement to create a better world for women everywhere.”

Here at Fy! we are proud to shine a light on our female-driven community and champion the brilliant women across Fy! from marketing to supply. Whilst Fy! features thousands of independent female artists and female-owned brands across our tech driven platform, women are still the minority in the tech industry. According to government-funded growth network Tech Nation, in 2022 only 26% of women made up the tech workforce. With that in mind we spoke to Liya and Maria, two of Fy!’s amazing women in tech to celebrate their achievements and use their #powertochange to encourage more women into tech roles helping to close the tech gender gap.

Fy! Software Engineer

Tell us a little about your role at Fy!

I am a software engineer and part of a small team at Fy! where we work on experimental features to improve our website and app. I’ve been working at Fy! for almost 2 years.

Why did you choose a career in tech?

There are so many reasons to choose a career in tech. Tech roles offer an added element of job security and flexibility - my team & I are based all over the world and you learn so much when you collaborate with colleagues internationally. I also love the friendly & supportive environment at Fy! The role itself is really fun, I definitely benefit from the balance needed between both logical and creative thinking within software engineering.

What is your biggest achievement at Fy! so far?

So far my biggest achievement at Fy! has been the growth & development I’ve seen in myself from this role. I have gained confidence in the process of learning new things and have also been able to challenge myself to be uncomfortable.

When thinking of Women for Women International's #PowerToChange campaign message this International Women's Day, what advice would you give women who are interested in a career in tech?

Have no fear to ask questions, this is an industry that really promotes learning and sharing knowledge with each other and there is no judgement at all.

Also have fun with it. We are quite privileged in the sense that we are allowed to have fun in our jobs and decide what to learn, how to make things better and explore new ideas.

Fy! Software Engineer

Tell us a little about your role at Fy!

I’ve been a software engineer at Fy! for almost two years, working on adding new features to the website and app. Although I’ve worked in tech before, this is my first engineering job. I’m very grateful to have such encouraging colleagues who supported me at the start of my journey.

What is your biggest achievement at Fy! so far?

My biggest achievement is growing confidence in myself and my skills. We have a small team, and I had the opportunity to work with different aspects of the product and own some new features.

What do you love about your job?

My role at Fy! is really fun and never boring. There are so many new technologies emerging all the time you can learn something new every day. The opportunity to create things, the flexibility to choose what to learn and pivot between different roles within the industry are all reasons why I love working in tech.

When thinking of Women for Women International's #PowerToChange campaign message this International Women's Day, what advice would you give women who are interested in a career in tech?

When it comes to tech, women often face terrible imposter syndrome which could make applying for an exciting position challenging. I would advise finding people with the same goal, attending university, starting a bootcamp or looking for a job. It won’t be less scary, but you’ll meet like minded people who understand and support you.
